Over 3 million people visit the Lake of the Ozarks every
year. Whether they are occasional visitors, vacationers, part-time residents,
or people who live here year 'round, this is a place where summer is
a celebration!
The Lake, when first built, was the largest man-made lake in the world,
fed by the Osage, Glaize and Niangua Rivers. The Lake was opened to
the public on May 30, 1931. came into existence over 65 years ago through
an undertaking known as the Great Osage River Project. Construction
of Bagnell Dam began on August 6, 1929 by Union Electric. In the midst
of the Great Depression, some 4,600 employees labored day and night
to build Bagnell Dam and what was, at that time, the largest man-made
lake in the world. The Lake was opened to the public on May 30, 1931.
The Lake extends 92 miles from end to end and has several communities
located around it. Traveling around the Lake is now much easier with
the opening of the new Community Bridge.
